And more Sisterhood news...

Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 7 PM - Temple Beth-El Social Hall

Sisterhood presents Nina L. Collins, Ph.D, discussing:

"Legally Violating Sabbath Law" (or When The Rabbi Really Wants You To Break Shabbat)

In the second century BCE, Jews were prepared to die rather than violate Shabbat.  300 years later, the picture reversed, and the Sages viewed acts of healing and saving life a religious duty, and an essential good deed, even if it violated Shabbat.  What caused this enormous change, and how did the Jewish Sages manage it?  This talk traces the early history of Jewish attitudes toward acts of healing, and saving life during one of the most transformative periods in our history.

Nina Collins, esteemed mother of our own Sisterhood and TBE member Ruth Collins, lectures in the Department of Theology and the Language Centre at the University of Leeds.  Her book, "The Library in Alexandria and the Bible in Greek," examines the date and events surrounding the translation of the Torah into Greek, a seminal event in Jewish History.
